Shipping Neon Art to the USA – Safely, Correctly & Tariff-Free
For years I have received regular enquiries from collectors in the United States asking whether I could supply my neon artworks. Until recently, I had to turn most of these requests down. There were two main reasons. First, the United States uses a different electrical system (110V), so standard UK neon pieces cannot simply be plugged in. Second, traditional glass neon is fragile, and shipping it across the Atlantic has always carried a high risk of damage.
That has now changed. I have partnered with Tony at Neon Creations in Manchester, who is able to convert my designs to full USA electrical specification. Just as importantly, they specialise in creating custom wooden crates and bespoke packaging that properly protect delicate glass neon during long-distance shipping.
The first major test of this new process has just been completed successfully. A large Elvis “Heartbreak Hotel” neon was carefully crated, shipped to a client in Manhattan, and installed at their beach house outside New York. It arrived in perfect condition. This opens the door for American collectors who have been interested in my work but were previously unable to acquire it.
There is an additional practical advantage: original artworks are not subject to tariffs when imported into the United States. This removes a significant potential cost and makes acquiring a piece more straightforward.
